WHAT IS
Classical Pilates?
Pilates exercises focus on finding the muscles of your powerhouse (core) and strengthening this area to support your spine. If you are consistent in taking practice, you will reap the benefits of better posture, a strong centre, suppleness, a toned body and an improved sense of well being – not to mention how invigorated you will feel after working out!

Not all Pilates is the same.
There are many interpretations of Pilates, but there was only ever one method that is true to the Pilates name.
Classical Pilates is an exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago. It is proven to reshape and tone the body without causing stress and imbalance. Romana’s Pilates is the exercises and philosophies of Joseph Pilates. His work was handed down to the world-renowned protégé Romana Kryzanowska, in which I practice.
The movement is rhythmic, fluid and focused to build greater strength, flexibility and endurance. It is layered and structured as a system that requires progressive learning and mastery.
At Classical Pilates Method we honour and practice the true method of Joseph Pilates, teaching the original exercises with intention, integrity and safety.

Cathryn Langford
Level 4 Romana's Pilates Teacher Trainer
Cathryn is an energetic, inspiring and engaging Pilates Instructor with over 10 years of Pilates experience. She has a Diploma in Classical Ballet from the Australian Ballet School and a Diploma in Remedial Massage.
Cathryn’s initial experience of Pilates was when she attended a ‘Pilates summer school’ as a 17 y/o ballet student. It made her body feel strong and in control of an otherwise mobile and flexible body.
With a desire to study the True Method and philosophy of Joseph Pilates, she undertook the 700 hours intensive training at the Romana’s Pilates training centre in Sydney, under the tutelage of second-generation master teacher trainer Cynthia Lochard, one of the best in the world!
Once certified, Cathryn was offered a position at the training centre in Sydney and worked alongside Cynthia and her senior instructor’s for 4 years deepening her knowledge and skills of Joseph Pilates body of work. Click to find out more about Cynthia Lochard’s Pilates Studio.
In 2010, Cathryn was promoted to a level 4 Teacher Trainer in which she was qualified to assist and mentor upcoming Romana’s Pilates instructors.
Cathryn has also taught many ‘in-house’ corporate group mat classes over the years and has had contracts with the Sydney Opera House and Screen Australia and the administration team of the ‘West Coast Eagles’ in Perth.
Continued Education is required by Romana’s Pilates Instructor to remain current in the True Method. Instructors are required to attend annual workshops and conferences in Australia and abroad. Cathryn regularly attends national and international conferences in America and Europe.
Cathryn moved to the western suburbs of Melbourne and is now passionate about bringing ‘Real Pilates’ to the area.
Pilates has proven itself for more than 80 years as an effective and safe method of exercise, when taught and applied correctly. It has been the workout of choice for dancers, gymnasts and fitness enthusiasts for decades.
There are now many organisations have entered the market to capitalise on the latest fitness “trend”.
As a result, there is now conflicting information about what Pilates is, how it works and what credentials they should seek in an instructor.
Joe developed a brilliant approach to fitness that includes over 500 exercises; he also engineered all the equipment (which I use in my private studio), specifications and tuning required to teach them properly. There is no debate that his original approach can work wonders when applied by a qualified instructor.

JOSEPH PILATES
FAQ
Who can participate in Pilates?
Can I participate in Pilates if I have back problems or other injuries?
Joseph Pilates designed this programme to also be used as a rehabilitation tool. Pilates develops strength, stability, balance and symmetry to areas of the body that may have been misaligned due to injury. Let your True Pilates certified instructor know at any time if, something feels uncomfortable or ‘not right’ with an exercise, as there are modifications for all exercises.
How often would you recommend a Pilates workout?
Private, small classes and private lessons are available as well as mat classes.
Will I lose weight doing Pilates?
What is the ‘Powerhouse’?
The ‘Powerhouse’ area of your body is from the bottom of your ribs all the way to your hip line. It includes the abdominal muscles, low back muscles, pelvic floor, muscles around the hips, and the gluteal muscles. The ‘Powerhouse’ muscles work together to form a supportive corset for your torso. It is this ‘Powerhouse’ that gives us the energy, stability, strength, and control within the True Pilates exercises.
The core muscles are part of the ‘Powerhouse’ set, and using your core is part of using your ‘Powerhouse’. The core muscles are the deep stabilizers like the pelvic floor, the psoas, the multifidus, and the transversus abdominis, among others. However, the core muscles are not the big movers like the rectus abdominis or gluteals, that also belong to the group of muscles know as the ‘Powerhouse’, in True Pilates training.
Why Pilates Works Well for Men
Pilates, by contrast emphasizes movement from the centre of the body, the powerhouse, and developing core strength in the deep muscles of the centre to stabilize the torso and protect the back. This kind of core training makes Pilates an excellent technique for whole-body fitness, as well as a foundation for cross training and other kinds of sports and exercise.
Pilates exercises do seek to increase flexibility and range of motion, in a way that men often feel comfortable with as Pilates works toward functional fitness. That is, the ability to have the strength, balance, and flexibility that allows one to move through daily-life tasks, thereby enhancing performance and reducing risk of injury in other activities.

The Benefits of Pilates during Pregnancy
However it is recommended no new exrercise program should be started if you haven’t been doing it prior to pregnancy.
Many changes occur for women during this extraordinary time, including hormonal changes, weight increase and physical distribution, balance and centre of gravity, postural, muscular and ligamentous changes.
Pilates exercise can help women cope with these changes, possibly avoid problems both during and post-natal and assist with the actual birth. Many women who have remained consistent with their Pilates programs over their pregnancy report the benefits of conscious abdominal assistance, greater breathing capacity, leg strength and overall endurance during labour, and less post natal physical and postural concerns to name just a few.
